What is GSH

The tri-peptide glutathione or (GSH) is a combination of the amino acids glutamate (glutamic acid), L-cysteine, and glycine. Each and every cell in the body takes these raw ingredients to manufacture GSH. It is a very small protein (made of three amino acids) and is essential for life. It serves to protect the body at the cellular level. The three most important jobs are anti-oxidation, immunity boosting and detoxification. GSH is also found in every part of the body, especially the lungs, intestinal tract, eyes and liver. The body produces and stores the largest amounts of GSH in the liver, where it is used to detoxify harmful compounds so that they can be removed from the body through the bile. The liver also supplies GSH directly to red and white blood cells in the bloodstream; it helps keep red blood and white blood cells healthy to maximize the disease-fighting power of the immune system.



How does GSH work exactly?

GSH is the master antioxidant produced in the cell and crucial for our immune system to function properly. GSH protects the cell from free radical damage caused by toxins, UV radiation, pollution and so on. Elevated glutathione levels enable the body to produce more white blood cells. White blood cells are the body's garbage collectors and are the most important cells for maintaining sterility of the body fluids. Put simply, glutathione is 'food' for the white blood cells. When the body has the health and nourishment it needs, it works endlessly to eliminate acidic toxins and to protect itself. Increased levels of environmental pollution are stripping the body's store of glutathione more and more rapidly. Our main organ of detoxification of acidic waste products is the lymphatic system and the liver. This is the body's most concentrated source of glutathione



GSH has the following Major roles in our body

GSH is currently one of the most studied antioxidants and is the major antioxidant basically found in all cells, protecting it from free radicals. GSH also recycles other well-known antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E, keeping them in their active state. Being a major free radical scavenger enzyme, GSH protects individual cells, tissues of arteries, heart, lungs, liver, brain, immune cells, kidneys, lens and the skin from oxidative damages.


GSH is an important central detoxifier of the body, enabling it to get rid of undesirable toxins such as heavy metals, pesticides, solvents and other pollutants. The intercellular GSH body detoxification is one of the body’s most important defense systems.


GSH performs two tasks in the detox process. It quenches the free radicals created when the liver neutralizes toxins in Phase 1 detox and it combines with toxic chemicals such as found in cigarette smoke, auto exhaust and the deadly PCB’s, in Phase 2 detox so they can be safely excreted through the urine or the gut.

The liver, kidneys, spleen and Pancreas contain high levels of GSH as they have the greatest exposure to toxins. The lungs are also rich in GSH partly for the same reason.

GSH plays a crucial role in maintaining a normal balance between oxidation and anti-oxidation. This, in turn, regulates many of the cell's vital functions, such as the synthesis and repair of DNA, the synthesis of proteins and the activation and regulation of enzymes.

GSH is required in many of the intricate steps needed to carry out an immune response. For example, it is needed for the lymphocytes to multiply in order to develop a strong immune response, and for 'killer' lymphocytes to be able to kill undesirable cells such as cancer cells or virally infected cells.

GSH, apart from being essential for carbohydrates metabolism that prevent deposition of fats, exists in the breaking down of oxidized fats. GSH also plays a role in eliminating many carcinogens as well as maintaining immune function towards providing stronger anti-tumor defenses.
